Why bad educational system is a matrix problem?

Proper Education considers the backbone of a nation, since it educates the citizens, especially youngs the aspects of the society. It has affects not only on an individual's moral characteristic, but also has affects on social, political, economic and technological implications. Since proper education plays a huge role on individual and society, bad education system could also affects them badly. Therefore, education is good, but improper educational system causes complex problem, which put education as a matrix of a sustainability problem. In an academic journal the writers mentioned, “Economic development and social development are interrelated, thus, it is worth to note that if education broadly contributed in social development, it would have an impact on economic development.” (5)

Most of the sustainability problems we are facing today are because of poverty or having too much money; an economical problem, government; a political problem, and human ignorance to nature; a social problem. In different parts of the world, many students are getting education is for achieving certificates rather than to know how to do the job. Many of them are cheating to pass the courses to get the certificate. Most of education systems do not encourage citizens to think about politics. In democracy, everyone is a politician, but many people hate politics and ignore it. Usually private colleges are more demanding than governmental colleges and they cost a lot more too. Because of the high tuition cost, most of the students are in depth of loans by the time they graduate. Therefore, they have to overwork to pay off their loans. A survey “suggests that many U.S. workers may be working too hard, leading to more mistakes on the job, neglected personal relationships and higher health-care costs.”(2) Earning excess amount of money also causes many sustainable problems. Most wealthy people live very unsustainable life by having a huge house and several cars that increases the carbon footprint. Many people buy more stuff then they need. Then most of the items become waste and creates another sustainability problem. They also do not think that they are helping the corporation by over consuming. All these bad choices made by human are causing different pollution, global warming, climate change, and other big problems.

Educational system in Bangladesh

The education system in Bangladesh is little different from USA education system. Up to eighth grade every students take general education. From 9th grade, they are separate into three different groups: science, arts and commerce. From that level, students only have to take the classes related to their group, with Bengali, English, and math in common. 11th and 12th grade consider as a higher secondary level. It is also similar to 9th and 10th grade but more advanced. Higher studies in colleges also have similar system. Having specific courses from the early level, unable students to have greater range of knowledge. Like science major will know very little to nothing about the other majors. There is no gym in the schools. Therefore, there is no physical education class available to the students. There is no health class. Therefore, students do not know about health, different diseases and family planning. From the primary level, students are not asked to be creative. For almost all the subjects, most of the students memorize the exam materials and write those down on test. Therefore, many of them lack in communication. Students also do not have various resources or access to libraries. Besides the Bengali medium schools, Bangladesh also has English medium school in many cities and madrasas in various parts of the country. In English medium schools, students learn all the courses in English. Madrasas are Muslim religious schools. These schools offer traditional Islamic instructions to Muslim boys and girls. Subjects taught in these institutions, focus mainly on the study of Holy Quran and most of the students have to memorize the Quran. From these schools, students obtain extreme values and attitudes. They often have larger families and oppose to women education and work. “Madrasa students are more likely to believe that the optimum number of children desire is not a matter of personal choice; rather it depends on God.” (3) They have very little knowledge beside the Quran. Sometimes student are introduced with the extreme views of the instructor, which lead them to be racial and brutal.

How does it affect stakeholders?

Professor Dr. Salahuddin M. Aminuzzaman mentioned, “The word quality can be described in terms of five different approaches that are used in higher education. These are: Exception (High Standards), Consistency (Zero defects), Meeting the stated purposes, Value for money and Transformation of the participant (the value-added factor). It also refers to the four pillars of education: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and with others, and learning to be”. (4) According to his meaning of quality, Bangladesh is lacking in quality not only higher education but also the other levels. The education quality differs in the governmental school and private school. Because of better education, most of the people want to go to the private institutions but because of the higher cost low income families cannot afford private schools or English medium schools. The overall education quality is so pure in the schools that most of the students need a private tutor or they have to admit in a coaching center. Since they are very expensive, many students from poor families cannot afford them. Teachers are also not teaching properly in class to earn extra money teaching outside. Education quality also differs in city schools and village schools. To get better education village students sometimes their whole family migrates to cities resulting over crowded cities. Because of poverty, Bangladesh has a lot of child labor, but the primary education system, does not offer them the skills that they need for work. Therefore, a huge percent young generation from poor families either drop school or does not go to schools. It also affects students in villages, where they get primary education free, but still avoid school.

Conclusion and solution

In Bangladesh, there are lower Rate of Return (RoR) from higher education provision because of lower quality education and the nature of the course, but Colin (1999) and World Bank (2002) fine out that RoR of Vocational Education and Training (VET) is significant and higher than other types of education. Therefore, the government should increase budget for in-service training, workplace learning and industry linkage with education is required. More than half of the population is illiterate in Bangladesh, and adults are big portion of that. To reduce that, Government has adopted adult and non-formal education. Adult and Mass Education centers have been opened in many places where the adults are getting education on environment, agriculture, fisheries, cooperatives etc. The curriculum includes simple reading, writing and calculation and the textbooks and follow-up books have been designed for this purpose. These classes are mostly held in evening and at night for the convenience.

Since Bangladesh is having a lot of natural disaster and citizens are creating different pollution, the government should include sustainability problems in the textbooks. Currently the different media is very affective in teaching citizen about natural disaster but they are not that affective in teaching about sustainability problems. Therefore, different media especially television media could be very helpful. From Mahmudul Islam’s report, “The National Curriculum and Text Book Board (NCTB) has introduced the issues of natural and human induced hazards, vulnerability, risk and disaster preparedness in different chapters of the subjects on Disaster Management in different books e.g Social Sciences, General Science, Bangla, English, which is being reviewed now in order to further incorporation considering re-defining risks and of new and emerging issues like climate change (CC).” (6)

This table is comparing the percent of economic and social values that learned from schools and informal provisions. To increase the rate of return, Country should not produce huge number of higher educated individuals than its need as it consumes higher unit cost. The rules should be restricted for the professionals to work in their receptive field explicitly.
.
Some factors that constrain many educational institutions are inadequate financial support, lack of facilities and lack of industry and corporate support in research. Therefore, some other steps that needed to be taken to improve the quality of education. Like, changing the method of teaching and learning as well as evaluation methods, renewing the curriculum continually, updating and upgrading professional knowledge and skills, improving the educational, administrative, and resource environments in which teaching and learning take place, and making strict rules and laws for the instructors will encourage teachers or professor to teach properly.
